Welcome to our family. We intentionally avoid using the word "team" to describe our organization as it does not do justice to the camaraderie, selflessness, and devotion of those involved in our events. Unfortunately, the pandemic has brought us to a halt, even ending 27 consecutive years of our oldest event, the Admiral's Cup Ball Hockey Tournament in Rhode Island. Even without rinks open, we've found ways to make an impact. If you look close, our jersey stripes feature subdued names of 100+ fallen Coast Guard members. As a way of honoring the fallen, we are donating a portion of our web store's proceeds as part of our partnership with Coast Guard Mutual Assistance and the "Score with CGMA" campaign, which we hope to build upon as the world slowly reopens.

The Coast Guard Hockey Organization is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established to support members of the Coast Guard, past and present, their families, and the communities they serve through the sport of hockey. Since 2015, Coast Guard Hockey has put sticks in the hands of over 700 members of the Coast Guard family. Most importantly, we have helped raise over $1,000,000 for numerous national and local charities through the events it has participated in and coordinated.

Our participants typically travel worldwide to represent our organization in various military, first responder, and charity-affiliated ice, ball, and roller hockey tournaments. We liaise with local professional, amateur, and public service teams and nonprofit associations to raise funds and awareness for initiatives that mean something to our military and local communities. In the end, many go back to carrying out the work of the world's premier maritime service with the bruises, stitches, and memories earned in the heat of battle. We live by the Coast Guard Hockey core values of "Community, Sportsmanship, and Tradition."

FAQ

Answers to All Your Inquiries

Who can participate?

The majority of our events are open to the following members of the Coast Guard Family:

  • CG Active Duty, Reserve, Retired

  • CG Prior Service (Honorable/General Discharge)

  • CG Auxiliary (current)

  • CG Civilian

  • CG Contractor (under current CG contract)

  • Non-USCG Public Service Members (case-by-case basis)

  • CG Dependents/Immediate Family (17+, case-by-case basis)

  • Non-Affiliated Civilians (case-by-case basis)

What level are the events and how are the teams made?

CGHO sponsored events and exhibition games are open level. For most tournaments, we attempt to field an upper and lower team. Having accurate player information for participants is vital. If you have not done so, please complete your CGHO registration prior to registering for any events. If you see an event you'd like to participate in, and have questions, feel free to reach out to us. We try to keep it to a maximum of 15 skaters and 1 goalie for larger tournaments. For smaller events, we will cap at 13 skaters and 1 goalie.

Will I get TDY orders?

All events are "unofficial" military events and all costs, unless subsidized by CGHO, are the responsibility of the participant. Administrative absence and permissive travel orders for these events may be authorized for military members, subject to command approval per (a) Military Assignments and Authorized Absences, COMDTINST M1000.8 (b) Personnel and Pay Procedures Manual, PPCINST M1000.2B. Download an adminstrative Absence Memo.

How much does it cost?

There are standard rates for all of our Public Serice Tournaments. E5 and below is $75, with all others $100. We'd love to subsidize all costs but have found that people tend to "no-show" more often if there isn't a monetary commitment. We do try to subsidize lodging expenses fortravel events with a $50/night rate. One day events, and our Admiral and Commandant Cup events are the only times we deviate from our standard rates.

Do you only have ice hockey events?

No. We also have our annual Coast Guard Admiral's Cup Ball Hockey Tournament each year. No skating or hockey skills are required. We are looking to add more off-ice events so stay tuned.

Do I need to purchase jerseys?

No. Supply full uniforms for all events except the Admiral and Commandant's Cups. Just PLEASE return them. You are more than welcome to pick up a personalized jersey in our webstore for wear at events.

Can I volunteer with CGHO?

We are always looking for help across multiple facets. From graphic design to running events, reach out to us if you'd like to get involved.
